Melvia B. Green is an Alternative Dispute Resolution neutral who is qualified to serve as a civil mediator for both trial and appellate matters; arbitrator; and special master/magistrate. Ms. Green began her private Alternative Dispute Resolution practice after a long and distinguished judicial career. She served both as a Florida appellate and trial court judge for over 20 years.
For over 14 years, Ms. Green served as a District Judge on Florida’s Third District Court of Appeal, a court of last resort for most appeals. As a member of that court, she extensively reviewed trial and administrative decisions for legal correctness. She authored approximately 1,000 signed and unsigned legal opinions on various substantive and procedural issues, including those of first impression. Upon her retirement from the court, Ms. Green was the proud recipient of the 2008 Hon. Alan P. Schwartz Judicial Excellence Award given by the Miami-Dade County Bar Association.
Prior to her appointment to the Third District Court of Appeal, Ms. Green also served on both the Miami-Dade Circuit and County Courts for approximately 7 years. As a state trial judge, Ms. Green presided over approximately 375 jury trials and was the fact-finder in over 500 non-jury trials. Both jury and non-jury trials included, but were not limited to, the following type actions: contract and complex commercial matters; insurance; employment disputes; health-related disputes; professional malpractice; business and professional torts; personal torts; residential and commercial mortgage foreclosures; residential and commercial landlord/tenant disputes; construction; and equitable matters such as injunctions and receiverships.
Throughout the course of her judicial career, Ms. Green was selected to serve on numerous committees whose missions were to enhance the quality of the judicial system and /or legal profession. Some of such committees included: Florida Supreme Court Commission on District Court of Appeal Performance and Accountability; Judicial Evaluation Committee; Supreme Court of Florida Committee on Standard Jury Instructions (Civil); Judicial Management Council Operating Planning Workshop; Constitutional Revision Workshop participant; District Court of Appeal and Circuit Court Educational Committees; Florida Parole Commission Nominating Committee; Florida Supreme Court Standing Committee on Mediation and Arbitration; Bencher, Eugene P. Spellman Inn of Court, University of Miami School of Law; Bencher, Peter T. Fay Inn of Court, St. Thomas University School of Law, Miami, Florida; and Faculty Advisor, General Jurisdiction Course for new trial judges at the National Judicial College, Reno, Nevada. In addition, Ms. Green was frequently invited to serve as a lecturer on various appellate, trial and legal ethical topics to members of the bar.
Prior to her judicial career, Ms. Green was a commercial and securities litigator with the law firm of Morgan, Lewis & Bockius. She represented corporate clients in complex litigation cases in both court and arbitration proceedings. She also served as an Assistant U. S. Attorney in the Southern District of Florida where she represented various federal agencies in civil proceedings. Finally, she was in-house counsel to the former Florida Power Corporation where she drafted and reviewed contracts, provided legal advice to various business units and managed litigation of outside counsel.
Ms. Green received her law degree from the University of Miami (FL) School of Law and Bachelor of Science degree from Northwestern University. In addition, she is a graduate of both the General Jurisdiction and Appellate Courses for state court judges at the National Judicial College, University of Nevada at Reno.
